Housing, Jobs, and Hope for Homeless Youth!
When my father first came to the mainland from Puerto Rico he experienced abject poverty, gang violence, and all of the peripheral issues so endemic in The Projects of New York City. It was programs like those offered by SAY which lifted him out of the culture of poverty, violence, and risk taking behaviors to which he was so exposed and showed him what he could do and what he could be. Early intervention is key to changing these risk factors and chief among these is getting youth off the street with a roof over their head and a warm meal in their stomach.
On November 3 I will be sleeping outside the SAY Dream Center to advocate for the many homeless youth who go to sleep without a home every night in Sonoma County. Between now and then, I am committed to fundraising for Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) and the thousands of youth and families they serve.
One thing my father always told me about life and helping people, "whatever you do, for the rest of your life, it is never enough, you can always do better, always do more." This is your chance to do more, help me help homeless youth in our community by donating and let's lead young people in need out of homelessness!
Did you know that youth between the ages of 12-24 make up 25% of our homeless population in Sonoma County? Whether the burdens of homelessness come from a lifetime of poverty, the challenges of mental illness, or the threats of recurring abuse, the single most common finding is that youth who are self-sufficient have at least one stable relationship with a supportive adult. That’s where SAY steps in.
SAY’s services help homeless and disconnected youth stabilize their lives, find safe housing, explore their educational goals, and develop the skills to become contributing community and workforce members.
Today I ask you to help me support the work of SAY and give all youth the tools and skills they need to achieve self-sufficiency. Please click the donate button on this page and join us in ensuring that the trauma of homelessness and disconnection loosens its grip on the deserving, at-risk youth struggling in our community. On behalf of the lives you will change with your gift, thank you!
