#TenThousandDays. #OneColdNight. You can help.
Will we? Won't we? What can we do?
Inexplicably, Sonoma County is once again under siege. #KincadeFire rages to our northeast, in the mountains above Santa Rosa, Windsor and Healdsburg. Superhero firefighters have, so far, been able to hold the line, preventing it from overrunning the highly-populated areas of our community.
On November 8th, Social Advocates for Youth once again PLANS to host #OneColdNight. Best laid plans... given the chaos of the past week, it may be deferred out of necessity. But that doesn't mean the need isn't there. And that doesn't mean you can't still help.
This year, youth homelessness has increased by 29% in Sonoma County. That means 657 young people under the age of 25 are experiencing homelessness in our community right now. Youth are still the most unsheltered homeless population in Sonoma County - 93% will sleep outside tonight, vulnerable and alone.
The young people I’m sleeping out for may be escaping years of physical abuse, a dangerous human trafficking ring, a drug-addicted parent, a house overflowing with rage, or may have “aged-out” of the foster care system with little to no resources for success. And guess what? Most young people experiencing homelessness are unseen by me and you every day. They are sleeping on couches, they’re sleeping in a broken down car, or they’re trying to stay safe in remote places of the county that are unfit and dangerous for humans, especially young people, to live in.
SAY’s services help homeless and disconnected youth stabilize their lives, find safe housing, access mental health care, and develop the skills to become contributing members of our local workforce.
YOU MAY ASK, WHAT'S THE REFERENCE TO "TEN THOUSAND DAYS"? WELL, THAT'S MY PERSONAL GOAL. AND THAT'S WHAT I ASK YOUR HELP TO ACHIEVE. It's a pretty straightforward plan: From October 30th to November 8th, that's ten days. On each of those days, I want to raise ONE THOUSAND dollars. TEN DAYS. A THOUSAND DOLLARS EACH DAY. TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. That's my goal. That's my mission. And I will once again put my money where my mouth is. For the first $5,000 raised, I will match those contributions dollar-for-dollar. $10,000 suddenly isn't an outrageous goal.
AND HERE'S ANOTHER TWIST. I already have one very generous donor who's said, "Keith, for the FIRST thousand dollars you raise, and for the FIRST thousand you match, we'll match you in the same amount." So, for those who donate NOW, your $1 donation could be matched TWO FOR ONE!!
BUT I'M PUTTING OUT ONE MORE CALL TO ACTION, AND PUTTING OUT ONE MORE CHALLENGE. Maybe you're like my anonymous benefactor; maybe you're feeling generous but want to leverage your donation. Are you feeling generous? Do you want to make me actually work for your donation? Can you possible be another matching donor of a thousand or more? Bear in mind, under this particular campaign, your donation would be linked intrinsically to my own efforts. Only if I raise funds would you be under any self-imposed obligation to match. Every dollar raised could be matched two-for-one or more. Interested? Contact me directly. I'm going live and public on Facebook for the next ten days; you can IM me. there. You can email me at email@example.com. Or you can call me at 707-543-1501.
Will #OneColdNight2019 happen as planned? I don't know. Will #KincadeFire spare us additional grief? That may be the condition under which #OneColdNight goes on. Whether it happens or not, #TenThousandDays will happen. The need is great. You can help.
I ask you to help me support the work of SAY and give all youth the tools and skills they need to achieve self-sufficiency. Please click the donate button on this page and join us in our fight to end youth homelessness in Sonoma County.
On behalf of the lives you will change with your gift, thank you!
